The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is a comic book series about stoner brothers, and it will be adapted as an adult animated series. It has been announced this week that executive producers of Workaholics, King of the Hill, American Dad, and Silicon Valley are joining Mark Canton (Power, 300) and Courtney Solomon (American Haunting, Dungeons & Dragons) in bringing the comic series to life in animated form.
The show will feature voices by Adam Devine (Workaholics, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) and Blake Anderson (Workaholics), who both are also serving as executive producers and will be part of the creative development process.
WTG Enterprises has given the green-light for eight 22-minute episodes, and it will premiere in early 2020. Gilbert Shelton, the creator of the comic book series, is attached as an executive producer. Serving as the showrunners are Alan Cohen & Alan Freedland (King of the Hill, American Dad), with John Althschuler & Dave Krinsky (Silicon Valley) and Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer (Highly Gifted) as the writers and producers.
Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty) and Pure Imagination Studios (The Simpsons, LEGO Batman) will be working on the animation.
Those wanting a taste of the upcoming series can check out The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The panel will be held on Friday, July 19th at 7 p.m. in room 6 BCF at the San Diego Convention Center.
“There is so much topical, pop-culturally relevant, irreverent and hilarious source material to pull from, we’re just beyond thrilled to be working on such a fun and layered property,” said Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen. ”Now is the time to be creating smart adult animated shows that touch on topics that are timeless and timely.”
“We connected so much to these characters,” said Adam Devine and Blake Anderson. “They’re just trying to enjoy life while understanding the world around them, and the adventures they go through along the way had us fully giggling while simultaneously making us think. When the opportunity arose to get involved not just as talent but also on a creative level, we jumped at the chance and also WEED, man!”
Synopsis: The series will revolve around three rowdy characters looking to shake up history and push the envelope while keeping audiences entertained and wanting more.
The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is created by Gilbert Shelton and first appeared in 1968 as an underground press comic strip. The story of the three brothers and a mischievous cat from San Francisco has been translated into 14 languages and has sold over 40 million comics worldwide.
