'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' - a cult cannabis comic strip that both celebrated and satirized the counterculture of the 60s and 70s - is being adapted into an animated series by 'Workaholics' creators Adam Divine and Blake Anderson.
Cartoonist Gilbert Shelton introduced 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' all the way back in 1968 as part of the underground comix movement. Since then, the highly intoxicated adventures of Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, Phineas T. Phreak, Fat Freddy Freekowtski and their cat have become cult comic favorites, and they've made well-deserved appearances on lists of the ten best cannabis-themed comic books.
Now they're making the jump from the page to your TV screen.
An eight episode series of the show is in production and should be ready to air early next year. Comedians Adam Devine and Blake Anderson - creators and stars of the hit TV comedy 'Workaholics' - will be doing voice work for the series as well as acting as executive producers alongside 'Freak Brothers' creator Gilbert Shelton.
The production cast will also feature people who worked on such animated comedic mainstays as 'King of the Hill,' 'American Dad,' 'The Simpsons' and 'Rick & Morty.'
The 'Freak Brothers' aren't the only cannabis comic to be adapted into a TV. Back in May it was announced the DC Comics antihero Swamp Thing would be getting his own series as well. But while Swamp's history with cannabis is a little more understated (marijuana may not make any appearances in the show), you can expect 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' show to be a proper stoner comedy.
