The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is a counterculture comic series that was created by Gilbert Shelton in 1968. The comic stars Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek, Phineas T. Phreak, and Fat Freddy Frekowtski (often with Fat Freddy’s eccentric cat). The three are misfits who fall into countless misadventures. The comic became an immense success with over forty million copies being sold.
A television series based on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers was ordered by WTG Enterprises. WTG Enterprises ordered eight episodes that will be approximately twenty-two minutes. The adult cartoon will have Alan Cohen (King of the Hill) and Alan Freedland (Due Date) as showrunners. The two stated,
“There is so much topical, pop-culturally relevant, irreverent and hilarious source material to pull from, we’re just beyond thrilled to be working on such a fun and layered property. Now is the time to be creating smart adult animated shows that touch on topics that are timeless and timely.”
The series will be executive produced by Mark Canton (Power) and Courtney Solomon (Cake). The Silicon Valley creators, John Althschuler and Dave Krinsky, are set to write and produce. Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer, of Highly Gifted, will also work on the show as writers and producers. The animation will be done by Pure Imagination Studios who also worked on The Simpsons.
Two Workaholics alum, Adam Devine and Blake Anderson will voice the lead characters on the show. The two will also have creative input and work as executive producers. The pair said,
“We connected so much to these characters. They’re just trying to enjoy life while understanding the world around them, and the adventures they go through along the way had us fully giggling while simultaneously making us think. When the opportunity arose to get involved not just as talent but also on a creative level, we jumped at the chance and also weed, man!”
More information on the show is expected to come at a Comic Con panel set for seven p.m. on July 19 in Room BCF of the San Diego Convention Center.
