The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is a counterculture comic series that was created by Gilbert Shelton in 1968. The comic stars Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek, Phineas T. Phreak, and Fat Freddy Frekowtski (often with Fat Freddy’s eccentric cat). The three are misfits who fall into countless misadventures. The comic became an immense success with over forty million copies being sold.

A television series based on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers was ordered by WTG Enterprises. WTG Enterprises ordered eight episodes that will be approximately twenty-two minutes. The adult cartoon will have Alan Cohen (King of the Hill) and Alan Freedland (Due Date) as showrunners. The two stated,

“There is so much topical, pop-culturally relevant, irreverent and hilarious source material to pull from, we’re just beyond thrilled to be working on such a fun and layered property. Now is the time to be creating smart adult animated shows that touch on topics that are timeless and timely.”

The series will be executive produced by Mark Canton (Power) and Courtney Solomon (Cake). The Silicon Valley creators, John Althschuler and Dave Krinsky, are set to write and produce. Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer, of Highly Gifted, will also work on the show as writers and producers. The animation will be done by Pure Imagination Studios who also worked on The Simpsons.

Two Workaholics alum, Adam Devine and Blake Anderson will voice the lead characters on the show. The two will also have creative input and work as executive producers. The pair said,

“We connected so much to these characters. They’re just trying to enjoy life while understanding the world around them, and the adventures they go through along the way had us fully giggling while simultaneously making us think. When the opportunity arose to get involved not just as talent but also on a creative level, we jumped at the chance and also weed, man!”

More information on the show is expected to come at a Comic Con panel set for seven p.m. on July 19 in Room BCF of the San Diego Convention Center.

'Workaholics' Creators Adapt Cannabis Comic 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' into Animated Series

Original Article - Civilized.

By Calvin Hughes

'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' - a cult cannabis comic strip that both celebrated and satirized the counterculture of the 60s and 70s - is being adapted into an animated series by 'Workaholics' creators Adam Divine and Blake Anderson.

Cartoonist Gilbert Shelton introduced 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' all the way back in 1968 as part of the underground comix movement. Since then, the highly intoxicated adventures of Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, Phineas T. Phreak, Fat Freddy Freekowtski and their cat have become cult comic favorites, and they've made well-deserved appearances on lists of the ten best cannabis-themed comic books.

Now they're making the jump from the page to your TV screen.

An eight episode series of the show is in production and should be ready to air early next year. Comedians  Adam Devine and Blake Anderson - creators and stars of the hit TV comedy 'Workaholics' - will be doing voice work for the series as well as acting as executive producers alongside 'Freak Brothers' creator Gilbert Shelton.

The production cast will also feature people who worked on such animated comedic mainstays as 'King of the Hill,' 'American Dad,' 'The Simpsons' and 'Rick & Morty.'

The 'Freak Brothers' aren't the only cannabis comic to be adapted into a TV. Back in May it was announced the DC Comics antihero Swamp Thing would be getting his own series as well. But while Swamp's history with cannabis is a little more understated (marijuana may not make any appearances in the show), you can expect 'The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' show to be a proper stoner comedy.

FABULOUS FURRY FREAK BROTHERS TELEVISION SHOW COMING IN 2020, FROM ‘KING OF THE HILL’, ‘SILICON VALLEY’ WRITERS; ‘WORKAHOLICS’ ALUMNI TO STAR

After almost fifty years, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic series is hitting the big time with their own television show.

WTG Enterprises has greenlit eight 22-minute episodes set to debut in 2020. The upcoming cartoon will be executive produced by Mark Canton (300, Power), Courtney Solomon (AFTER, Dungeons & Dragons), and original comic artist Gilbert Shelton.

Created by Shelton, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic first appeared in 1968 as an underground press comic strip and centered around a threesome of “freaks” and a mischievous cat from San Francisco who are consistently looking for a state of bliss, relieved only by bursts of paranoia or stimulant induced frenzies. The Freak Brothers quickly became beloved, being translated into fourteen languages with over 40 million comics sold worldwide. The adventures this group of misfits take are both wildly boundary-pushing and remarkably human, with common themes including cannabis, law-breaking and politics.

King of the Hill alumni Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland are serving as showrunners, while Workaholics’ Adam Devine and Blake Anderson will lend their voices and creative input into the show as executive producers. John Althschuler and Dave Krinsky (Silicon Valley), as well as Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer (Highly Gifted) will serve as writers and producers.

Executive Producers also include Jeffrey S. Edell (president of WTG and former Chairman of MySpace parent company Intermix Media, CEO of Soundelux Entertainment, The Kids Are AlrightKiller Elite, The Grey, Just Friends) will also serve as Co-Executive Producer.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Gilbert Shelton by Manfred Mroczkowski, Executive Director of InterLicense, Ltd., who will also be joining as an Executive Producer.

“There is so much topical, pop-culturally relevant, irreverent and hilarious source material to pull from, we’re just beyond thrilled to be working on such a fun and layered property,” said Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen. ”Now is the time to be creating smart adult animated shows that touch on topics that are timeless and timely.”

“We connected so much to these characters,” said Adam Devine and Blake Anderson. “They’re just trying to enjoy life while understanding the world around them, and the adventures they go through along the way had us fully giggling while simultaneously making us think. When the opportunity arose to get involved not just as talent but also on a creative level, we jumped at the chance and also WEED, man!”

Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty, Animals) and Pure Imagination Studios (The Simpsons, Lego Batman) will handle animation on the series.

The showrunners, writers, and talent behind the upcoming show will reveal more at their San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 19th at 7:00pm in room 6 BCF of the convention center.

WTG Enterprises: The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

WTG Enterprises has commissioned an animated adaptation of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (pictured top). Created by Gilbert Shelton in 1968, the underground comic follows three stoned-out hippies and their cat through dark and trippy adventures. It initially ran in underground papers, before finding a wider audience through comic books. One critic dubbed the characters “the Marx Brothers of marijuana”; WTG Enterprises says the show will be faithful to the comic’s irreverent adult humor.

Having purchased the property last year, the branding and licensing company is assembling a starry team to create the show:

  • Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland (King of the Hill, American Dad) are showrunners

  • John Althschuler and Dave Krinsky (Silicon Valley) will write and produce

  • Adam Devine and Blake Anderson (Workaholics) will voice characters, executive produce, and help develop the series

  • Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer (Highly Gifted) will write and produce

  • Creator Gilbert Shelton will be an executive producer

  • Animation will be handled by Starburns Industries (Rick and Morty) and Pure Imagination Studios (Angry Birds 4-D Experience, The Lego Movie: 4D – A New Adventure).

A series of eight 22-minute episodes targeted at adults has been greelit, and is set to debut in early 2020. Some years back, it was reported that the U.K. studio Celluloid Dreams was adapting the comic as a stop-motion feature. Footage of the film even made it online, but the project seems to have been shelved.

The talent behind this project will discuss the project at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Friday, July 19, at 7pm (room 6 BCF).
